Gilmer County was featured in Sports Illustrated Magazine for the one of the best locations in recreation and sports for biking, canoeing, rafting, kayaking and trout fishing.




Don't miss a scenic and memorable train ride on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway through the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains along the picturesque Toccoa River from Blue Ridge, Georgia to Copperhill, Tennessee.  The train runs March through December for spectacular views through the  beautiful North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains and the Tennessee Mountains.  In the summer season, the train ride can be combined with Ocoee River rafting.  Riding the train in the spring, you will be treated to a glorious glimpse of Appalachian Spring in all its glorious array with dogwoods and redbuds in full bloom.  In fall, the blazing patchwork of blazing colors is dazzling.  In December, ride the Christmas Express Train on the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway to celebrate the holidays Polar Express style.

At our Ellijay cabins, wildlife is very abundant and very likely you will view deer, eagles, hawks, wild turkeys, river otters, beavers, numerous water fowl including geese, ducks, herons, ospreys, kingfishers, bears and other wildlife in this protected environment.  Please be respectful of their environment.


Although many come to the North Georgia Mountains simply to relax and retreat, our Ellijay Georgia cabins offer unlimited opportunities for exciting recreation and adventurous activities. The following are a few of the many popular activities enjoyed by fun seekers:

Boating, Tubing, Swimming, and Canoeing
Lake Blue Ridge and Carters Lake are popular locations for various water sports. Your family will enjoy the  open waters. Boat rentals are available.  Tubing, canoeing and kayaking are all fun water activities in Ellijay.  Just over the Tennessee state line, whitewater rafting on the Ocoee River offer thrills and excitement.  Rent a sit-on-top kayak for kayaking on the Cartecay River or you can rent or buy tubes to go tubing on the Cartecay River.  FREE TUBING ON THE CARTECAY RIVER!  Buy a River Rat tube from Wal-Mart (under $10) or rent one from the Cartecay Water Shed. Cartecay River Shed offers free parking, restrooms, changing rooms and river access, as well as free pick up at the take out point (donations accepted to help pay for gas).  Tubing on the Coosawattee River is offered by the Coosawattee River Tubing Company which supplies the tube, life vest, changing rooms, and shuttle service to and from the river for an admission price.

Hiking, Biking, Horseback Riding
Miles of trails are located in the Cohutta Wilderness, the Chattahoochee National Forest and the area surounding, Ellijay, Blue Ridge and Dahloenga. Your family will have many exciting hours exploring the beautiful North Georgia Mountains with scenic vistas and numerous waterfalls.  Many stables are located nearby for opportunities for trail rides through the North Georgia Mountains.

Lake and Stream Fishing
Of course you will staying at a riverfront or Georgia streamfront cabin with stocked and wild trout on world class trout streams. You will also enjoy stream fishing in the many other nearby North Georgia Mountains streams.  Guide services are available.  Fishing on Lake Blue Ridge and Carter's Lake will yield some fascinating results.

Wildlife Photography
The North Georgia Mountains is home to various wildlife and chances are, you will have opportunities to view the wildlife in their natural habitat at your Ellijay Georgia cabin rental. Scenic drives and hikes through the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains will provide additional opporuniities to photograph wildlife and the breathtaking scenery.  Photography opportunities for the patient photographer may include deer, eagles, hawks, wild turkeys, river otters, beavers, numerous water fowl including geese, ducks, herons, ospreys, kingfishers, bears and other wildlife.

Winter Activities
Winter is also a great time to visit the North Georgia Mountains to have a chance to play in the snow. "Ron Henry-Horseshoe Bend RIver Park" sits on a stretch of the Toccoa River, 10 miles from Blue Ridge, Georgia just 1.5 miles upstream of McCaysville on River Road which is off of Hwy 60.   Free admission.
Enjoy live acoustic music, a weekly jam session of local talent,  including traditional Appalachian, Bluegrass, Blues and Jazz music in a riverside outdoor setting on the Toccoa River.

 Apple Orchards

Although Georgia is called the Peach State, you can't convince the old timers in Ellijay that it isn't the Apple State.  Instead of being peachy, everything here is rosy as an apple!  Be sure to visit the Blue Ridge Georgia Mountains for the numerous apple orchards and farmstands.  Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge is an all time favorite year round all time farmstand.  the feature fired peis, donuts, fritters, apple and fruit pies, breads, cider, apple butter. Another favorite apple farmstand stop is Panorama for some of their famous fried apple pies topped with ice-cream.  Plan to spend a day drinking cider and picking your own apples at one of the Ellijay local orchards.
