Winemaking and vineyards in Georgia dates back to the 1800s when Georgia once was a major grape growing state until  strict prohibition laws in 1907  practically destroyed the wine industry in the state of Georgia. By the early 1900s, Georgia was the 6th largest states  growing grapes and producing wine.  More Georgia wine history.

 With steep, well-drained foothills, North Georgia's landscape, soil, temperate climate and elevation are conducive to growing winemaking grapes. Because of the soils in North Georgia, Georgia vineyards are undergoing an exciting rebirth,and are producing wines of excellent and award winning quality. Frogtown is a 57 acre wine estate located halfway between Dahlonega and Cleveland Georgia. Frogtown encompasses 32 acres of vineyards and a tri-level gravity flow winery specifically designed to produce the unique wines made from Frogtown grapes.
In 1998, native Atlantans Craig and Cydney Kritzer founded Frogtown in a location carefully selected for quality wine grape production and outstanding mountain views, the Frogtown District of Lumpkin County, Georgia. After researching Frogtowns soil, diverse climates and terrain, Craig divided the land up into separate vineyards. He planted different wine grape varieties based on the characteristics of each vineyard site. Frogtown is now home to 32 acres of vineyards planted to 15 different wine grapes varieties, both red and white.
Frogtown produces wines under the 'Frogtown' label and the 'Thirteenth Colony' label.
Frogtown Winery invites you to come and relax on their deck with a glass of  wine and enjoy the views overlooking their vineyards, the lake and the North Georgia Mountains.

This newest winery is under construction near Dahlonega and is bringing a taste of fine wine in Italian style to the North Georgia Blue Ridge Mountains.This winery is located high on a North Georgia foothill and resembles a Tuscan villa.  The highest hills of the 400 acre plus property have been reserved for a Blue Ridge winery. Reminiscent of a centuries old Tuscan villa, the winery will be surrounded by a 40 acre vineyard-scheduled to be planted in the spring of 2007. The ground breaking for the winery was October 11, 2006 and the building is scheduled to open to the public in the fall of 2007. Special features will include a gourmet gift shop, tasting room, restaurant and event facility, roof top Owner’s Club, and a state of the art winery producing fine Georgia wines.  This winery will be open for tours along with a wine tasting room, culinary classes and educaional wine seminars, and sweeping views of the North Georgia Mountains.

WINE HIGHWAY WEEKEND
 Saturday, March 29, and Sunday, March 30, 2008


There will be a $20.00 fee for each participant which will be collected at the first winery visited. Travelers will receive a “Wine Highway Weekend” collectors’ glass which will give them admission to ALL participating wineries at no additional charge. Normal tasting fees will not be charged to anyone participating in traveling the Wine Highway.
Member wineries and Affiliate Members will each provide their own unique open-house format, with many offering food and wine pairings, music, barrel and library wine tastings, discounts, drawings and other special attractions.
